Total Eclipse of the Balloon

From my bedroom window this evening as I went to close it fearing rain
Getting closer and firing up
Oo-er it's lower than the cathedral spire
Fire it up - fire it up!
Suddenly looks more distant - can they do that?
Firing up again as it gets closer
Phew - safely passing behind!
And there it is - look carefully through the leaves - on the other side

I was going to blog about my latest buy - a wonderful 1953 issue of Vogue, but will save for another day.

  1. Don't you love seeing them in the sky? They look so surreal to me.

  2. Phew, that was close! What a fantastic view they must have had. we occasionally have hot air balloons flying over, they are fun to watch.

  4. we had a celebratory trip in a h.a balloon over Salisbury Cathedral very early one summer's morning many years ago- it was totally magical.

We landed in a field near Winterslow, completely remote apart from a small farm cottage from whence a little girl came running, dressed in a fairy outfit.
Her mother said she'd seen the balloon coming down and run to change, thinking it might be a fairy chariot!

Complimentary champagne and canapes and one of those memories that make you smile whenever it's recalled

  6. How cool to see that from home. the sky looks horribly dark, no wonder English people age so well, you hardly ever have any sun compared to us!

  7. Woah that looks close! I hope perspective was playing tricks on you and it wasn't as perilously near the spire as it looks.

  8. Thank you for your lovely comments my dear elegant followers!

The balloon was really close, just my camera not so good. But possibly some aspect of perspective playing tricks Alex!

Kitty - am pondering your observation re ageing. Does staying in the dark preserve us? Actually it was just a darkening sky after a sunny day, due to gathering rainclouds on a summer evening. Though I think the sun gets a bad press which is why we poor Brits turn 'lobster' whenever there's a heatwave!

Tom - that happens every night chez nous (Lol!)

Ms Bunny - what a truly magical experience. My heart goes out to that little girl who sounds just like my tiny grand-daughter. I'm now going to request a similar flight for my upcoming birthday.
