The Most Beautiful Harbour in the World

My darling mother called it " My uncle's bridge" because he was a foreman in one of the workshops at Dorman Long steel producers in Middlesbrough that won the contract to build Sydney Harbour Bridge in the 1920s.  She recalled being taken to the works as a child to see the Bridge opened ( presumably on film) in 1932.  Then in an undreamt of  turn of events, she actually got to see the bridge in situ in the 1960s as when she arrived in Sydney as the wife of an RAF officer stationed with the Royal Australian Airforce.

Sunday 18th March 2012 was the 80th anniversary of the Harbour Bridge opening. My beloved 92 year old mother died the very next day.

  1. Oh Cecile. I'm so sorry. I really wish I could write something to give you some solace or comfort. Just know that I'm thinking of you and how devastated you must be. I hope you do find peace again soon. I do know for sure, that just from seeing the photos of you and your mother (here on your blog), that she loved you very much. Carmelxo
PS Bridges are incredibly strong and connect what would otherwise never be joined. They a lovely metaphor.

  3. I am so glad your family had a connection to Dorman Long & Co of Middlesbrough .. it makes the whole story of the Sydney Harbour Bridge more real, somehow.

Losing a beloved parent, however, is the pits :( Wishing you well at this horrible time.
